if i could… facilitates internships between international interns and volunteers and high profile host organisations in Cape Town and New Delhi. We work with you to design a customised internship experience which aligns with your academic or career goals and aspirations. Our human rights internships are among the most popular, and recently we caught up with Alex, a human rights intern who completed her programme in November 2015.
Alex joined us from the United States earlier this year to participate in a human rights internship with if i could… She is a graduate of the University of Kent with a degree in Diplomacy, focusing on the Middle East, and her interests are in human rights and transitional justice.
“I felt like Cape Town totally exceeded my expectations,” said Alex. “I liked the internship offerings at if i could… and felt that my interest in human rights were well suited to the programme. At her human rights NGO she was mostly involved in drafting letters, allegation and referrals. She also sat in on consultations with clients who came to her host organisation to seek support and assistance. Examples of some of the human rights issues that were raised from clients were discrimination, lack of access to education and right to food and water.
Alex was in Cape Town during the time of the #FeesMustFall movement, and she attended the protests. “I was passionate about [the movement] and felt like I needed to do my bit,” she explains. She felt that South Africans are much more aware of their rights relative to Americans, and will fight for what they believe in. “This was my most stand-out experience in Cape Town,” she says.
Alex went on to say that she feels much more confident after her internship in Cape Town, and that she has more clarity on her future and what she would like to do. Some of her highlights of her time in the Mother City were: a trip to the Garden Route with fellow if i could… interns, Diwali at a colleague’s home, the Observatory in Sutherland, and riding a motorcycle for the first time. “Now I’m hooked!” she laughs when telling us about her motorcycle experience.
“Come with an open mind and be open to meeting new people. Come with expectations, but know that your experience might be different, so be flexible,” says Alex. Of all her experiences, she lists “making the best friends ever” at the very top. Upon returning to the United States, Alex hopes to pursue her dreams in Washington, DC due to her strong interest in human rights and advocacy.
Below is Alex’s testimonial where she talks about her time in Cape Town.
