if i could… makes it possible for young people from across the globe to take part in meaningful social justice internships in Cape Town and New Delhi. We caught up with Irene, who has recently completed her internship with if i could… at a Cape Town nonprofit host organisation that specialises in social justice. Irene graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor in Arts in Political Science and shares with us her experience.
During Irene’s internship she took part in a variety of activities that support the advocacy activities of her host organisation. “I spent the majority of my time researching mob justice and vigilantism. I also spent some of my time attending meetings, and summarising notes from the South African Police Service (SAPS) committee meeting that I attended.” Irene went on to say “my time in the office was fun, it was great chatting to my colleagues about South African politics.”
Irene fell in love with Cape Town about four years ago, while watching the sunset on Table Mountain. “Because I had been to Cape Town before, I knew it was a laid back city, slow paced and certainly beautiful. This is part of what attracted me to this internship,” said Irene. She had a great time experiencing all Cape Town has to offer. “Mzoli’s is definitely my favourite Cape Town activity!” Irene said. She also enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends – this was definitely the highlight of her trip. “The relationships I have made with the other interns in the if I could… intern house in Bo-Kaap, as well as the people at work, have been invaluable. They have taught me a lot about myself.”
Irene said that she will be returning home to pursue a Master’s degree in development with a focus on Africa. She plans to visit Cape Town again after she completes her Master’s degree.
if i could… offers a number of social justice internships in Cape Town and New Delhi with NGOs who are addressing issues of economic and social inequality. “Our interns have the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives,” says Leandri Pretorius, one of our if i could… Programme Coordinator. “Interns are given the opportunity to advocate for social improvement by addressing a range of issues such as health, education, sanitation, safety and governmental transparency.”
